Success starts when you take charge of your books.

Bookkeeping

Your books shouldn't be a year-end surprise.

Bookkeeping and accounting support for small businesses

You didn't start your business because you wanted to spend evenings figuring out why QuickBooks is off by $3,842.

Maybe you're doing the bookkeeping yourself. Maybe an employee handles it. Maybe everything is connected to QuickBooks and you're hoping it's all getting recorded correctly.

At some point, though, you need to know:

Are the books actually right?

At Atlas CPA, we can handle the bookkeeping for you—or work with the person already doing it—to keep your accounting accurate, current and ready for tax time.

Bookkeeping should give you more than a reconciled bank account.

Getting the transactions into QuickBooks is only the beginning.

We want your books to tell us what actually happened in your business.

That means bank and credit-card accounts are reconciled. Revenue and expenses are classified correctly. Loans and fixed assets are recorded properly. Payroll agrees with the payroll reports. The balance sheet makes sense.

And when something looks wrong, somebody notices.

Because ultimately, those books are going to be used to prepare your tax return, make business decisions, apply for financing, or answer questions about how your business is doing.

They need to be right.

What can we take off your plate?

Depending on what you need, we can help with:

✓ Bank and credit-card reconciliations

✓ Payroll accounting and reconciliation

✓ Transaction review and classification

✓ 1099 preparation

✓ Accounts payable and accounts receivable

✓ Sales-tax accounting

✓ Balance-sheet reconciliations

✓ Monthly financial statements

✓ QuickBooks cleanup and corrections

✓ Year-end accounting and tax preparation

You don't have to buy everything on the list.

Some businesses want us to handle the bookkeeping from beginning to end. Others already have someone entering transactions and simply need professional oversight.

We'll figure out what makes sense for your business.

Already have a bookkeeper? That's fine.

We don't necessarily need to replace them.

A good bookkeeper and a good CPA serve different purposes.

Your bookkeeper may handle the day-to-day work while we periodically review the accounting, correct problems, answer questions and make sure everything is ready for the tax return.

That can be especially useful for a growing business that needs more accounting expertise but doesn't need—or want—the cost of a full-time controller or accountant.

We can work with your existing bookkeeper instead of starting over.

There's "bookkeeping." And then there's bookkeeping that's actually right.

We've seen plenty of QuickBooks files that reconcile to the bank and still aren't correct.

Things like:

$40,000 sitting in "Ask My Accountant."
That's not an accounting strategy.

Loan payments recorded entirely as expenses.
Part of that payment may be principal, not an expense.

A new truck recorded as "Auto Expense."
That's probably an asset that needs to be depreciated.

Owner distributions buried in operating expenses.
That can distort what the business actually earned.

Payroll that doesn't agree with the payroll tax returns.
Something needs to be reconciled before the tax return is prepared.

Old accounts receivable that hasn't been collectible for years.
If nobody is going to pay it, we need to figure out why it's still on the balance sheet.

The point isn't that bookkeeping has to be complicated.

The point is that someone needs to notice when the numbers don't make sense.

Your accountant shouldn't discover everything at tax time.

One of the biggest advantages of having your accounting connected with your CPA is that we aren't seeing your business for the first time when we're preparing the tax return.

Problems can be identified earlier.

Questions can be answered while you still remember what happened.

And tax issues can sometimes be addressed before December 31, when there may still be something we can do about them.

That's considerably better than discovering a problem in March and explaining what you should have done six months ago.

What will you actually get from us?

Our goal is pretty simple:

Books you can rely on.

You should be able to look at your financial statements without wondering whether the numbers are meaningful.

We should be able to prepare your tax return without first spending hours figuring out what happened during the year.

And when you have a question about the accounting, you should have somebody to ask.

That's what we're providing.

Not sure what level of bookkeeping help you need?

You don't need to figure that out before you contact us.

Tell us how you're handling the books now, what's working, and what's not. We'll help you determine whether you need ongoing bookkeeping, periodic accounting review, a one-time cleanup—or whether what you're already doing is working just fine.
